For Rachael, I pledged

After a few years of listening to Rachael Yamagata from illegal downloads, I'd finally got a hold of her albums, Happenstance and Elephants/Teeth Sinking Into Heart this year, when I found stores that would ship to Malaysia. After that, I kept on going to her website back and forth and learned that she was on Pledge Music, raising funds for her next album, this time as an independent artiste.

Pledge Music (aspiring musicians, you might want to pay attention) is a platform for independent musicians, allowing them to communicate with their fans directly and raise funds for their next big project, also working with specific charities of their choice. Rachael's campaign had been running for months, but I didn't understand how pledging worked, so I pledge until the last minute - only days before Rachael's new album release. I had no idea what I was missing out!

I pledged - spent $25, a package which includes her digital album download (only downloadable when the album is released) and a copy of her new album, signed with love (to be shipped when the album is released). If I had known sooner, I would have pledged for her Aston Martin guitar and a Skype session with her - yep, she provided those as well!

Also, I realized that pledgers get to see writings and pictures posted by the singer, videos that were locked from the public - how Rachael set up her summer band camp, how the team hung out, how they recorded the songs and the crazy things they did while recording the whole album. Like a blog. As a fan, I suppose you just feel a lot closer to the artiste - pledging makes the whole process a bit more personal and because of this, I think I appreciate the new album more. There's a lot more to Rachael than heart-wrenching songs!

Because of the pledges, Rachael now has her own label, the new album was released within a few months and she's set to tour very soon. Would be so cool if we could support our local independent talents like that!

See Pledge Music and check out the artistes there, support the musicians you love!

I'll talk about the new album, Chesapeake, when I get it :)

  1. Caught her show in Singapore years ago. Cried a river. She is flawless in every way.

  3. I pledged for her too! And I can't wait for the CD to arrive. Before that, I pledged for Zee Avi and I got a signed CD and a T-Shirt designed by her. Very happy pledger, I am!Hehe
In my opinion, Pledge Music is a very very very good platform to not only buy the music that you like but at the same time for us to contribute a little. I just hope more artist will do this!:)

  4. @Natasya That's nice. I wish I'd get the chance to see her live, too :)

@Anonymous The hair, really? You're the second person to say that this week!

@Anonymous Yay, another happy pledger! Good to know that you pledged for Zee Avi, and what you said about Pledge Music is very true. Keep on spreading the goodness of it haha!
