Bibik’s new cook book

My Bibik sometimes gets on my nerves when it comes to food. Eating at home can be quite depressing when you can expect what’s going to be on the table every day. If my dad brings home curry powder from the mart, I can expect having either fish or chicken curry five times a week.

Whenever I’m deprived of change, I’d request her to cook something else:

“Bibik, nanti masak sup bunjut daging boleh tak?”

“Dagingnya masih di Mydin”

She often serves ayam masak kicap, kacang buncis masak kicap and chicken soup for dinner – dishes heavily skewed toward my brother’s preferences just because he’s the biggest eater. He’s the type who could finish a pot of rice in one meal, so Bibik feels that cooking for him is worthwhile, for he represents a higher ROI compared to me.

You know how I usually go to the same few restaurants and eat the same things? My family is worse! They can eat the same thing every single day. My parents say nothing about the same kinds of soup served daily, my brother says nothing about the ayam masak kicap. Further motivating Bibik to cook the same thing, over and over.

Asna got sick of it recently.

My mom told me that Asna had gotten Bibik a new cookbook from a nearby bookstore, because according to her, “Bibik always cooks the same things!”

I went down to see Bibik, to find out what was really going on.

“Bibik, Mama cakap Asna belikan Bibik buku masak?”

“Mama cakap Asna beli sebab Bibik selalu masak benda sama”

“Adik kamu tu, mengarang saja! Cakap dengan Bibik lain, cakap dengan Mama lain”

She pointed to the book that was on the coffee table. Asna has better PR skills than I do, it seems. Because when she handed the book to Bibik, she said:

“Bibik saya belikan buku masak untuk Bibik, boleh Bibik belajar masak!”

I held the book and flipped through the pages. Recipes contained inside include, “kangkung sambal belacan”, “brokoli goreng” and “sup cendawan” – things that Bibik already know. The book’s clearly for noobs.

“Ada-ada sajalah adik kamu tu!”

She was amused. She got the point.

Thanks to Asna’s effort and request, my mom had bought new ingredients today and tomorrow, Bibik’s going to make us some mushroom soup, as per the recipe book!

I always cook dishes according to my brother preferences because 1. he is picky eater 2. he is not really the kind to try out new dishes 3. he wants rice everyday .There is the time where my mom merajuk sebab hari-hari makan ayam masak merah and she hates ayam masak merah,so I have to cook 2 different poultry dish everyday.le sigh. Now all he eats is tom yam ayam.I was so fed up having tom yam everyday,I teach him how to make one so I can try out new recipes with my mom.Win win 😀
