Engagement Diaries

Engagement preparation: The dress (Part III)

I usually take my time when it comes to making big decisions, but it wasn’t the case when it came to the engagement dress. It was a hasty decision to hire a designer I’d only met (or heard of) and to buy meters of fabrics on the spot. Left me worried on many occasions, wondering whether I was making the right choice.

But despite needing several fitting sessions (the dress was too tight), I was pleased that the designer was patient, remained soft spoken and respectful, even with my indecisiveness and paranoia, really listened to my concerns regarding the embellishments and most importantly, did a good job with the dress. I was lucky to have gambled with the right designer.

If you appreciate simpler designs like me, the dresses that Altelia Amani have designed for other clients, hung inside the store may overwhelm you. You may think they’re a bit too much, but just remember that the design ultimately depends on your preference. If you want something over the top, they will create something over the top. If you want something subtle, they will create something subtle.

As for the rates, the starting price (not inclusive of fabrics) for a basic solemnization dress is RM2000, while for a reception dress, it’s RM2500. The final rate depends entirely on how elaborate your dress is and the types of the fabrics used in the process of creating the dress e.g. beaded lace requires more work. Not very cheap, but remember that you’ll be getting your money’s worth. When I turned my sleeves, I was impressed to see how neatly they have sewn the french lace on the dress. Not all the upcoming designers would be able to promise the same level of workmanship.

Would I recommend Altelia Amani? Yes, I would. Details if you’re interested:

But before you decide on a dress, don’t be like me! Do ample of research, ask around, know what you want and have a chat with the designers you have shortlisted. Last but not least, make sure that you’re comfortable with the decision.

Hi Syezzy! I think tailoring for solemnization starts from RM2,000, while tailoring for wedding reception starts from RM2,500. You’ll need to buy or bring your own fabrics.

But the price really depends on the design and the fabrics. The more complex the design and the more intricate the fabrics, the more expensive.

Thanks babe, I should’ve put the info up there. Will update it 🙂

Hi Nida, not sure what fabric exactly (I’m a rookie) but I think it was silk chiffon, lined with satin silk. The patch lace, I’m not sure what type it is, but it’s from Solstiss.
