Before I left for work last Wednesday, I packed my Macbook inside its case. I was planning to go through pictures I’d taken recently on with the Macbook during lunchtime, at the office.
Very quickly, I took out my memory card from the camera, unzipped the Macbook case and stuck the memory card inside the Macbook’s SD card slot. I zipped the Macbook case back and put it in the car, drove to work and carried it to my work station.
At the office, somewhere before lunchtime, I took the Macbook out of its case. That’s when I realized… that the memory card wasn’t in the SD card slot. It’s not in the case or anywhere on my desk, either. It was gone!!!
I told myself to not panic. Losing a memory card is a big deal, especially when it holds hundreds of pictures you’ve recently taken and have yet to save it in the drive — but it could’ve just been dropped inside the car.
Before leaving for home, I checked my car and the parking lot. Nothing.
For a moment, I wondered whether I really took the card out of the camera… or whether it was my imagination. So sitting helplessly inside the car, I called Asna who was at home to check whether I’d really left the memory card untouched in the camera. She checked the camera out and told me that there was nothing inside — which meant that I did take it out in the morning.
I was hoping that I’d dropped it at home and not anywhere else. I didn’t have kinky pictures inside the card… I think. But the thought of losing it or having it found by someone really bothered me!
I texted everyone at home and informed them to be on the lookout for a black memory card. Including Reza, who practically searched the room for it once he got home.
Instead of hanging at the office and waiting for the traffic to subside, I drove home at 10 past 6. At home, I traced back my steps to see if I’d dropped it anywhere. When there was no sign of it, I went back to the car and for a good 15 minutes I was adjusting the seats and reaching the floor to see where it might have been dropped. Nothing.
I went up to my room, thinking, maybe I should accept the fact that I’d lost the card. I held my Macbook and another memory card, trying to re-enact how I inserted the lost card into the card slot.
Then I saw it. A tiny black thing, sticking out.
WTF. Instead of inserting the memory card in the card slot that’s on the left side of the Macbook that morning, in a rush, I accidentally inserted the card in the CD slot on the right side.
It was never lost — it was with me all the time!!!
So I took a picture of the memory card that was stuck inside the CD slot and sent it to Reza, who had just left for a futsal match:
What a waste of mental and physical energy.
