Here’s Asna’s current obsession: loom bands.
Mama brought boxes of them home one day, she said it was a request from Asna. The next thing I know, it’s the thing that keeps her occupied more than the computer. With some of the tools she had, she made braided bracelets.
I was pretty impressed. There were about five bracelets in different color combinations.
Her bracelets had names – Carrot Cake (orange and green), Cotton Candy (pink and purple), Ocean Sparkle (dark blue, sky blue and yellow), Firefox (orange and yellow), Ice Lemon Tea (green and yellow), Blue Earth (dark blue and green), Rainbow (rainbow colors).
She gave me the “Rainbow Fishtail” as a gift.
Studying the bands
Asna studies how to make new bracelets by following instructions on paper and on Youtube (things that I can’t really do). She also reads up on the bands.
“You know, I read loom bands can cause cancer!”
“Then why are you touching it?!”
“It’s OK, I’m not going to put it in my mouth.”
“But can’t cancer spread by touch?”
Reza looked at me like I’m stupid.
“I think Asna lagi tau how cancer boleh spread dari you.”
She was telling me that there are real loom bands and there are fake ones.
“You know, there are replicas of these bands.”
“What are replicas?”
“Fake ones la. Some people make it to fool and sell it to unsuspecting customers.”
Amboi. I bet she doesn’t really know what “unsuspecting customers” mean lol.
“Can you tell the difference?”
“Yeah, these are fakes.”
She pointed to some of the bands.
“How can you tell?”
“I don’t know how to explain it, but I know.”
Asna’s bracelet business
Asna showed me the different bracelets she made.
“Are you going to sell them?”
“Yeah, for RM0.50. each.”
“How much did Mama buy the bands?”
She told me the prices of the sets. It cost almost RM50.
“How much bracelet can you make out of all the bands?”
“Maybe 5 more?”
So for RM50, she could make 10. Which means that cost of materials (not inclusive of labor) needed to make one bracelet is RM5. She intended to sell the bracelet at 50 sen, 1/10 of its cost.
I was very disappointed by how non-calculative she was -_-‘ Oh well, she was willing to let them go at a loss so this is truly a labor of love.
Here’s her recent collection:
She told me to pass the message to you guys:
“Tell you blog readers to expect my upcoming bracelet store. I’ll be selling the easy bands for RM1, the intermediate bracelets for RM2 and the hard bracelets for RM3.”
So… wait for it!
(Price might be revised after P&L discussion.)
