Prapen Jewelry is a silver production center in Gianyar, Bali, we were told. It’s owned by a Balinese family, generations of silversmiths in Bali. Long heritage kot. The road leading to the place was surrounded by a properly manicured garden, that I felt like I was about to go in someone’s mansion.
At the entrance of the showroom were very intricate silver jewelries adorned with other gems, showcased in glass boxes, with prices fetching thousands. That’s when I realized that we’re at somewhere high end (relative to the other silver workshops in Bali).
Inside, were more jewelries on display in their jewelry showroom which looks just like any other high-end jewelry boutique. A lot of things were being — from modern bracelet charms and stud earrings, to the intricate Balinese-inspired jewelries and other kinds of silver art. The collections they had were exquisite and very well-made. Sayangnya I wasn’t allowed to take photos of the showroom.
For years, I’ve been admiring the woven silver jewelries of this jeweler, who’s based in Bali. Here at Prapen, there were similar designs being sold for less.
We were then led to the back of the showroom, where the open workshop was. All the ibu-ibu were very into their silver jewelry-making. We could see it in their serious faces. We sat down for a while to see how different silver jewelries are made and then left to let them work in peace heh. If anybody’s interested, they can also arrange for private classes for silver jewelry-making.
