So I was having dinner with some of my classmates.
In front of me were the French men who came to Tokyo recently to study and to be close to their Japanese partners. They were discussing about their other half but I wasn’t paying attention until this came about:
“You got a bento already? I will never get a bento!”
I caught what they were talking about immediately.
Japanese women usually wake up early to make bento for their men for them to bring to work. This guy’s girlfriend is already making him bento, the other hasn’t. They make a deal out of it.
I joined the conversation.
“How come she’s not making you bento?
“She doesn’t care. Maybe I have to marry her to get the option to get bento.”
Then the other guy said:
“If you want to get married, you’ll have to buy the ring first.”
Then they were discussing about the ring and how the French culture expects the ring’s worth to be 3x the men’s salary.
So I shared this conversation with another guy who gets bento.
“She doesn’t make him bento? That’s not nice… Before you get married you’re supposed do more things for your partner, because after you get married it usually gets worse. He’s never getting the bento.”
OMG I DIED.
Thought expectations like this happens only in our culture. Wouldn’t have expected that they’d care about getting their bento.
