The bag spell. The period when you’re obsessed over bags. You know the feeling? It’s that period(s) in your life when all you do is look at bags, like you’re under a spell. I went through it a couple of times over the last decade — it resulted in the purchase of 10+ Balenciaga bags 😆 (For the record, I only keep half of them now.) On this particular period I thought about the Stardust Stam that I was still admiring. It never slipped my mind. I kept contemplating on getting it, but finally got it at the right time and at the right price.
It was 5 years ago when I initially saw the studded Stam called Stardust at the Marc Jacobs store, while shopping with Mama. I was a fan of the Stam, but no Stam struck me like the Stardust. Maybe because it was the time when studs and chains made a big comeback to the fashion industry — think Balmain’s military jackets, Louboutin spike flats and Vita Fede chain bracelets — the Stardust was the perfect fit. It was so Kate Moss!
I tried to persuade her to buy it. She said although the bag was beautiful, it was too heavy, so she passed. My heart broke. What’s a girl to do when she was still studying and had no purchasing power? 😆
Some time after I graduated and began earning, I went on the lookout for the bag again, whenever I was under the bag spell. I was still not over the bag like I was not over the era where it came from (everything was so edgy then). So I went to the stores and after that I went online. At the times I found it though, I hesitated paying a lot on something off-season and decided to wait and see. This happened for years. Yes, screw my indecisive self.
Being price conscious and fickle was worth it, it seems. Although the discontinuation of the Stam 3 years later was heartbreaking to many, it was good for me, because it resulted in an influx of Stam bags in the pre-loved market i.e. eBay and among them, were the Stardusts, in pristine condition at a price I was more than okay with (less than $500!!!) — right at the time I was looking at the bags again!!!
Without hesitating much, I bought them — yes, I bought not one, but Stardusts in Black and Clay 😆
(Mama saw them and clearly remembers the bag that she passed. She held and tried them on, “Memang cantik, but too heavy!” It’s okay, it’s got nothing against the Giant City and the Paraty.)
With some bags, I do get a pang of guilt shortly after receiving them in the mailbox. Not for these, though. I used to wonder why people bother hunting for off-season and discontinued styles. So passé. But hey, I do it to 😆 Well, if it’s for you, it’s for you, whenever it’s from.
